The Celestial Tournament - a tough 11-week grind

I'll finally have the last of the Celestial Tournament pets on Tuesday. It's been quite a grind.

The Celestial Tournament is the original pet instance. You need to defeat three random pet battlers, followed by a "final four", all without healing a single pet. This requires extensive planning and careful preparation - you need to have the exact counters to each of the battles and many of the strategies require specific breed IDs of pets to win.

I have been using two guides: https://www.wowhead.com/guides/defeating-the-celestial-tournament-pet-battles#chen-stormstout-original-strategy and https://wow-petguide.com/index.php?m=CelestialTournament

The guides were written quite some time ago and don't take into account new behavior. For example, pet battles now have a lot more randomness to them in terms of the moves used, so it's difficult to follow the guides exactly. I found this happened the most with Taran Zhu and Chen Stormsnout - the strategies I could find only worked perhaps one in every five attempts. Since you need to defeat every trainer without healing, this means that it could take 25 attempts on average if you face these two trainers.

The other issue is that the pet instances take quite a long time to complete, even if you know exactly what you are doing. An attempt takes about thirty to 45 minutes and you can't make a single mistake or you need to start over again. Since I have small children, this often means I have to do my weekly tournament early in the morning before they awaken.

One small note: For Chi Chi, if you are using the two-wisp strategy, make sure that you line up your dodge with Chi Chi's dodge or the strategy won't work.

Other Achievements: I'm really happy to finally have flying. The two new areas are much simpler to navigate and I can finally work on all the obscure exploration achievements like "find all the troll tablets" that were so cumbersome when I had to worry about aggroing mobs all the time. I've also been very slowly working on my PVP pet battles. I'm trying to do those in my Draenor garrison since each PVP battle also counts towards "Win 2000 pet battles in Draenor".

Current stats: 2380/3565 Current focus is on Pet Battles achievement: 130/169 complete.

Remember to Share (300 Toys)!

This one has taken a while. I finally picked up 300 toys (and thus the mount for the achievement) after starting to seriously work on my Archaeology achievements for the first time. I've been doing the fortnightly Legion archaeology quests for a while (and thus had 800 skill) but I completely ignored this profession in earlier expansions as it seemed seriously boring. With some knowledge and a good addon, it's much better however. Some tips if you're just starting to work on archaeology: 1. Download the "Archy" addon. This addon does several things: first, it shows you the location and completion status of all digsites in the current continent. Second, it automatically sets the closes one as a waypoint for TomTom. Third, it indicates when it's possible to solve an artifact with and without a keystone, so you don't have to constantly check your archaeology screen. On top of that, the distance indicator shows when you are in the correct range from your ...

Beta update - best achievement EVER!

It probably won't make it to live. But check out this feat of strength from the beta:

A Song of Wind and Water

I've been working on Oracles and Ogri'la rep every day and have about four days to go. One thing I've noticed about these older daily quests is that there is little provision for high-level players that one-shot everything. Two quests in particular stand out as being annoying until you learn the high-level trick. The first is Banish More Demons in Blade's Edge. This involves placing a portal on the ground then killing demons within a few feet of the portal. The portal has a one-minute cooldown and you need fifteen demons. It was a slow exercise in frustration because kiting further-away demons was difficult sue to all my abilities one-shotting them before they got near. In the end, I learned to use the Shaman's "Purge" ability to aggro mobs without killing them and pull them close to the portal. The second, and more annoying, quest that isn't scaled for high-level players is the Ogri-la's Song of Wind and Water .  This involves weakening ...
